Charlie Hewitt(1947-)
Charles Hewitt, whose studio is now located in Jersey City and formerly in The Bowery in Lower Manhattan, is well-known as both a painter and printmaker.
“My paintings include my new thoughts and also memories of my life growing up with seven brothers & sisters along the Maine seacoast. I make important memories into simplified shapes called graphics. Like a poet selects just a few words to tell a whole story in a small space, I use my graphics to put a world of experiences into one simple shape”
“In some of my paintings, the wood-grained, printed paper takes the place of the layered background. I borrowed the technique from my own prints where I use a wood-textured background to add light and to give the prints snap. In the paintings, the woodgrain fills the space with a field of glowing color. Then, I paint over this background with the more sharply defined forms.”
